Dar Condemns India’s Attempt to Suspend Indus Water Treaty

LONDON (AIA) Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has emphasized the critical importance of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) to Pakistan’s water security and ecological stability. Addressing the British-Pakistani Lawyers Forum in London, Dar condemned India’s attempt to unilaterally suspend the treaty, calling it an “existential threat” to Pakistan’s 240 million citizens.
The forum unanimously condemned India’s actions as “water warfare” and pledged to establish a UK-based legal task force to defend Pakistan’s rights under the treaty. The task force aims to mobilize international legal and diplomatic support.
The Indus Water Treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, governs 80% of Pakistan’s freshwater resources. Dar stressed that the treaty cannot be suspended or held in abeyance unilaterally. The meeting marked the third gathering of the British-Pakistani Lawyers Forum, launched by the Pakistan High Commission in London.
