Global investment in animal health vital to prevent future pandemics says Rana Tanveer
— September 25, 2026ROME (AIA) Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has called for increased international investment in animal health, disease surveillance and One Health systems to help prevent future pandemics.
He was speaking at a high-level session titled “FAO and the Pandemic Fund: Building Robust Animal Health Systems and Sustainable Solutions to Prevent the Next Pandemic” at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome today.
The minister said pandemic prevention must start at the human-animal-environment interface by addressing risks early and strengthening systems that can detect and contain threats before they develop into crises. He said significant progress has been made within less than 18 months of implementation.
On animal health, Hussain said an upgraded electronic Animal Disease Reporting and Surveillance System is being developed with the endorsement of all provinces and regions. He said Pakistan is ready to share its experience of implementing the One Health approach within a large and complex federal system.
He also welcomed continued cooperation with the FAO, Pandemic Fund Secretariat and member states.
Hussain appreciated the FAO’s technical expertise and field presence in strengthening animal health systems and advancing the One Health approach. He called for sustained international cooperation and long-term financing to build on progress in pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.
