IT Minister Denies Government Involvement in Internet Disruptions, Citing VPN Use as Primary Cause

ISLAMABAD (AIA) Shaza Fatima Khawaja, State Minister for Information Technology, addressing the media on Sunday, explained the ongoing internet connectivity issues across the country, denying the government’s involvement in the recent blockade and slowdown. She said, “I can swear that the government of Pakistan did not block the internet or slow it down.”
Khawaja attributed the disruptions to the increased use of virtual private networks (VPNs) by internet users, which slows down phone connectivity. The minister assured that the government has been working tirelessly with experts to resolve the issue.
The IT minister highlighted the government’s initiatives to improve internet connectivity, including the installation of four additional internet cables and the introduction of 5G spectrum in 2025. The minister also announced the establishment of IT parks in Islamabad and Karachi, which will create over 10,000 jobs and generate significant revenue.
Khawaja revealed that a digitisation commission, headed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is being established to prioritize the IT sector. The minister praised the sector’s export growth, citing Rs3 billion in exports despite challenging conditions.
The IT minister’s statement comes as millions continue to face internet connectivity issues. While Khawaja denied government involvement, experts attribute the disruptions to increased security measures and surveillance. The government’s efforts to enhance internet connectivity and promote the IT sector are underway, with a focus on the 5G spectrum, IT parks, and digitisation initiatives.
