Punjab’s Acid Sale Regulation Bill to Prevent Acid Attacks, Ensure Women’s Safety

LAHORE (AIA) Hina Parvez Butt, Chairperson of the Punjab Women Protection Authority (PWPA), has submitted a new bill to Khalid Mahmoud, Director General of Parliamentary Affairs and Research, aimed at regulating the sale and purchase of acid to prevent acid attacks.
Developed in collaboration with the Initiative for Sustainable Development, the bill seeks to create stricter controls on acid sales, contributing to a safer environment for women. “We are committed to building a safer society for women,” Butt said, adding that the bill, once approved, will be implemented across Punjab.
Key provisions of the bill include requiring acid traders to obtain a license from the deputy commissioner, who will serve as the licensing authority. The licenses will be valid for two years, with authorities retaining the right to revoke them if any laws are violated.
Furthermore, the bill mandates that all traders must secure a license within 120 days of the law’s enactment or face heavy fines and penalties. The sale of acid to individuals under 18 years of age will also be strictly prohibited.
