German Scientists visit University of Karachi’s ICCBS

KARACHI (AIA) A delegation of German scientists, led by Prof. Dr. Thomas Iftner, Director of the Institute of Medical Virology and Epidemiology of Viral Diseases at the University Hospital of Tübingen, visited the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi (UoK) on Friday.
Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen, Director of the ICCBS, welcomed the delegation, which also included Prof. Dr. Daniel Sauter, Heisenberg Professor, and Dr. Sumbla Sheikh. The visit was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Asmat Salim, International Program Coordinator, and Dr. Iqbal Qureshi, Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Virology (NIV).
The visit aimed to explore ongoing research at the ICCBS and identify areas for potential collaboration, particularly in virology. Dr. Shaheen delivered a detailed presentation, showcasing the centre’s cutting-edge research and ongoing projects in viral disease studies. She emphasised the importance of staying informed about emerging viral threats to prevent future outbreaks.
“Staying updated on the latest knowledge of viruses and prevalent viral infections is crucial for preventing viral outbreaks during epidemics and pandemics,” she said.
During their visit, the German scientists toured various research facilities and engaged with faculty and students at the ICCBS. Prof. Dr. Sauter also delivered lectures on “Prion Diseases” and “The Origins and Evolution of Emerging Viruses,” contributing to the academic discourse.
Dr. Iftner and his team provided valuable feedback on enhancing research quality at the institute. The visit laid the groundwork for future collaborative projects in virology and molecular medicine.
