— October 30, 2024
DHAKA ( AIA ) The United Nations Fact-Finding Mission, established to investigate atrocities committed during Bangladesh’s anti-discrimination student movement in July, is set to finalize its report by the first week of December. This movement led to the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, shared this update with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus following a meeting with the Türk-led delegation. Shafiqul Alam, press secretary at the Chief Adviser’s Office, announced this development during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.
The fact-finding mission will submit its report to the chief adviser and subsequently to relevant ministries and advisers. Prof Yunus expressed gratitude to Türk for his supportive statement during the July revolution, which empowered protesters and strengthened their resolve
This marks the first time since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 that the UN is sending a fact-finding mission to investigate widespread human rights abuses. The move comes in response to growing international concern over reports of violence and repression during the student-led uprising
The UN Security Council has the authority to investigate and mediate, dispatch a mission, appoint special envoys, or request the Secretary-General to use his good offices, particularly in conflict areas with grave human rights violations
