Alhamra’s Literary Baithak Sheds Light on Cultural Heritage Preservation

LAHORE (AIA) The Lahore Arts Council, Alhamra, recently held an illuminating session with prominent researcher Dr. Ali Usman Qasmi, who explored the crucial role of archives and museums in preserving Pakistan’s history. The event, part of Alhamra’s ongoing Literary Baithak series, drew a diverse audience of history enthusiasts and scholars. Manahil, who moderated the session, enhanced the evening’s discussions, according to a press release issued on Friday.
Dr. Qasmi emphasised that a skilled historian must be a discerning storyteller, with a deep understanding of history as the basis for meaningful literature. “History is a reality that cannot be denied, reflecting the essence of any civilisation,” he remarked, underscoring the profound impact of historical awareness on societal values and cultural identity.
Addressing the importance of archives, Dr. Qasmi detailed how the preservation of historical records demands continuous improvement. He noted that future generations rely on well-maintained archives to access key cultural and historical milestones. Dr. Qasmi cautioned against the mere digitisation of historical materials without proper cataloguing, as this reduces archives to mere images, overlooking their deeper context. He urged attendees to view archives as living resources that require active stewardship to safeguard cultural heritage from natural decay.
Participants commended Alhamra’s commitment to fostering intellectual growth through such events. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where audience members discussed the future of historical preservation in Pakistan and Alhamra’s role in creating a well-informed, culturally enriched society.
