Severe Smog Chokes Lahore as Pollution Levels Hit Hazardous Levels
— November 7, 2024
LAHORE (AIA) Lahore experienced record-high pollution levels on Wednesday as the city’s air quality index (AQI) soared to an alarming 447, placing the 14-million-strong population in hazardous conditions. City authorities have warned of a potential lockdown if residents fail to follow smog safety guidelines, including wearing masks.
A Pakistan Meteorological Department spokesperson reported that stable weather conditions, typical in autumn and winter, are contributing to pollutant buildup. Low wind speeds, cooler temperatures, and humidity are trapping harmful particles, causing thick layers of smog to persist across cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Faisalabad.
Health officials caution that prolonged exposure to these smog levels could lead to a rise in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with preexisting conditions. Poor air quality is also impacting visibility on roads, heightening the risk of traffic accidents and disrupting outdoor activities.
The smog is expected to intensify in the coming week, especially in Punjab and major urban centres. Although temperatures remain above average, these stagnant conditions are likely to promote fog formation in plain and low-lying areas across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, compounding health and travel challenges.
