Skilled Artisan Crisis Hits Pakistan’s Furniture Exports

LAHORE (AIA) The Pakistan Furniture Council (PFC) has raised concerns over a severe shortage of skilled woodworkers and trained artisans, which is hampering the timely dispatch of export consignments to international markets.

During a board of directors meeting on Sunday, PFC Chief Executive Officer Mian Kashif Ashfaq highlighted that the lack of skilled labour is disrupting the manufacturing process and delaying export orders. He noted that Pakistan’s furniture industry depends on the craftsmanship of artisans proficient in both traditional and modern woodworking techniques.

However, the sector faces challenges due to a lack of training programmes, dwindling interest among younger generations, and inadequate incentives to attract and retain talent. “These delays are damaging our reputation as a reliable exporter and causing financial losses to businesses, which ultimately reduces our competitiveness in the global market,” Ashfaq said.

The PFC urged the government and private sector to collaborate in establishing vocational training institutes, launching skill development initiatives, and providing financial incentives to artisans. Such efforts are essential to revitalise the workforce, improve productivity, and ensure the timely delivery of export orders.

Ashfaq emphasised that a concerted approach could safeguard Pakistan’s position in the international furniture market while addressing the industry’s critical needs.
