SUPARCO Invites Public to Name Pakistan’s First Lunar Rover
— March 3, 2025
ISLAMABAD (AIA) The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has announced a nationwide contest to name Pakistan’s first lunar rover, set to launch as part of China’s Chang’e 8 mission in 2028.
SUPARCO called the launch a historic step towards space exploration and is inviting the public to participate in the naming competition. The winner will receive a cash prize of Rs 100,000 and national recognition.
The Moon has fascinated humanity for centuries, serving as a gateway to deeper space exploration. It contains valuable resources, such as water ice and rare minerals, which could support future space missions. A lunar rover is essential for exploring the Moon’s surface, navigating challenging terrain, conducting scientific experiments, and transmitting crucial data back to Earth.
By studying the Moon, scientists can uncover insights into Earth’s history, planetary evolution, and the potential for sustaining life beyond our planet.
The contest, themed “Name Pakistan’s Lunar Rover,” encourages students, space enthusiasts, and the general public to contribute to the country’s space journey. Participants are invited to submit a unique and meaningful name along with a brief explanation of their choice.
The deadline for submissions is 15 March, and details are available on SUPARCO’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SEAD.Pakistan.
