China’s Wind Power Boom: Fuelling Global Green Energy Growth

BEIJING (AIA) China continues to drive global wind energy development, contributing to the green transition both at home and abroad, according to the Government Work Report delivered during the ongoing Two Sessions.
The report highlighted China’s commitment to peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality through measures such as accelerating the construction of renewable energy bases in deserts, gobi, and wilderness areas, and expanding offshore wind power projects.
Reflecting this progress, the 2024 China Wind Power Hoisting Capacity Statistical Briefing, released by the China Wind Energy Association on February 24, revealed a significant surge in wind power installation. In 2024, China added 14,388 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 86.99 million kilowatts, a 9.6% year-on-year increase.
China’s wind energy exports also reached new heights. The country exported 904 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 5,193.7 MW to 23 countries, marking a 41.7% annual growth. The top five export destinations were:
Saudi Arabia (15%)

Uzbekistan (13.1%)

Brazil (12.5%)

Egypt (10%)

Kazakhstan (7.2%)
By the end of 2024, China had shipped 5,799 wind turbines with a total capacity of 20,787.8 MW to 57 countries across six continents—three more than in 2023, with Azerbaijan, South Korea, and Indonesia newly added to the list. The leading long-term export destinations were:
Vietnam (14.8%)

Australia (9.6%)

Uzbekistan (8.2%)

Kazakhstan (5.6%)

South Africa (5.5%)

Chinese offshore wind technology also expanded globally, with turbines exported to Vietnam, Italy, and Japan by the end of 2024.
China’s rapid wind energy growth underscores its evolving role as a global renewable energy leader, empowering emerging economies and reinforcing the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
