BYD Overtakes Tesla as World’s Top EV Maker in 2025
— January 3, 2026
BEIJING (AIA) Chinese automaker BYD has officially surpassed Tesla to become the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer in 2025, marking a historic shift in the global EV market.
According to report, BYD sold 2.26 million battery-powered vehicles last year, outpacing Tesla’s 1.64 million deliveries, which reflected a nearly 9% drop and marked Tesla’s second consecutive annual sales decline.
BYD’s EV sales alone surged by 28%, driving overall vehicle deliveries up by 7.73%. The company also expanded aggressively overseas, selling over 1 million vehicles outside China a 150% increase from the previous year despite facing steep tariffs in the U.S.
The milestone highlights BYD’s growing global footprint and the shifting dynamics of the electric vehicle industry.
