Dar calls for fair vaccine access, stronger global action against future pandemics

NEW YORK (AIA) Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has called for equitable access to vaccines and essential medical countermeasures, timely sharing of pandemic-related data and a strong, inclusive, WHO-led multilateral response to future pandemics.

He made the remarks while addressing a high-level meeting on “Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response” during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Dar highlighted Pakistan’s whole-of-government and whole-of-society response to the COVID-19 pandemic, citing measures including smart lockdowns, testing, contact tracing and social protection. He also pointed to the adoption of a multisectoral “One Health” approach.

He welcomed the adoption of the WHO Pandemic Treaty and stressed the importance of predictable financing, technology transfer and stronger scientific, technological and manufacturing capabilities in developing countries.
