Governments, Civil Society Must Unite for Girls’ Education: Pakistan Senate Chairman
— January 12, 2025
ISLAMABAD (AIA) Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Sunday called for collaborative efforts from governments, civil society, and international partners to foster an environment where girls are encouraged and empowered to pursue education.
Addressing the concluding session of the International Conference on Girls’ Education in Muslim Communities in Islamabad, Gilani emphasised that education is a fundamental right, not a privilege. He urged Muslim communities and the international community to reaffirm their commitment to girls’ education, referencing the teachings of Islam and the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who championed gender equality and universal education.
The conference brought together global leaders, including Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha, Muslim World League Secretary General Mohammad bin Abdul Karim Al-Isa, Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, and former Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik. The event focused on addressing challenges and exploring opportunities for girls’ education in Muslim communities.
Gilani highlighted the transformative power of education, particularly for girls, stating, “The future of any society lies in the education of its youth, particularly girls. We cannot build a prosperous future if we leave half of our population behind.”
He lauded Malala Yousafzai’s advocacy, which has inspired millions globally, and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring quality education for every girl, regardless of her background. He also paid tribute to the contributions of former Prime Ministers Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, who championed women’s education, gender equality, and social empowerment.
