Islamabad Safe City cameras get legal protection under new ordinance

ISLAMABAD (AIA) President Asif Ali Zardari, on the advice of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, has approved an ordinance to protect Islamabad Capital Territory’s Safe City cameras and surveillance infrastructure and ensure compensation for any damage caused to them.

The ordinance aims to prevent damage to the Safe City surveillance system and provide for recovery of repair or replacement costs in case of any loss, the President Secretariat Media Wing said in a press release on Saturday.

Under the ordinance, financial penalties will be imposed for damaging, instigating damage to or encouraging damage to Safe City cameras and other surveillance infrastructure. A fine of up to Rs2 million will be imposed for damage to each camera or piece of surveillance infrastructure.

Organisers may also be held responsible for damage caused to the infrastructure during rallies, processions, sit-ins, protests, strikes or other gatherings.

The amount of the fine and the cost of the damage will be determined by an authorised officer after giving the relevant person an opportunity to be heard. The person concerned may appeal the determination before the District and Sessions Judge, Islamabad, within 30 days.

If the imposed fine or damage costs are not paid, the amount may be recovered as arrears of land revenue.

Funds recovered through fines and compensation for damage will be used to repair and replace Safe City cameras and surveillance infrastructure.
