Jazz CEO Calls Telenor-PTCL Merger a Key Development, Stresses Market Repair
— October 3, 2024
ISLAMABAD (AIA) Jazz CEO Aamir Ibrahim highlighted the importance of healthy competition and market repair as essential drivers of innovation and customer benefits, following the announcement of the proposed merger between Telenor Pakistan and Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).
In a statement, Ibrahim called the merger a significant development for the telecom sector but emphasised the need to address broader industry challenges. “While we support initiatives that create synergies and efficiencies, it’s crucial to recognise the need for market repair,” he said, referencing the decline in industry-wide penetration and profitability. “Without tackling these core issues, achieving the vision of a digital Pakistan becomes increasingly difficult.”
According to a company news release, Ibrahim stressed that the merger should lead to a healthier and more competitive landscape that ultimately benefits consumers. “Jazz has always supported efforts to advance the industry, but any consolidation must ensure a level playing field, fair competition, and customer-centric innovation,” he added.
The Jazz CEO also underscored the importance of regulatory fairness, particularly in spectrum allocation. “If operators are granted additional spectrum without a transparent process, we will be compelled to explore all legal avenues. Equal access to spectrum and infrastructure is essential for fostering genuine competition in the telecom sector,” he noted.
As Pakistan’s leading digital operator, Jazz remains committed to working collaboratively with industry stakeholders to build a vibrant, future-ready telecommunications sector. Aamir reaffirmed Jazz’s dedication to maintaining a competitive ecosystem, adding, “The customer must always be at the heart of innovation, and that can only happen when the industry is on stable financial and operational footing.”
