Khunjerab Pass to Operate Year-Round, Boosting China-Pakistan Trade

BEIJING (AIA) The Khunjerab Pass, a vital land port on the China-Pakistan border in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, will operate year-round beginning Sunday. The pass, situated at an altitude of approximately 5,000 metres, serves as a key trade link between China and Pakistan and an important gateway to South Asia and Europe.
Previously, the Khunjerab Pass was operational only from April to November, closing during the harsh winter months of December to March. Its extended operational period is expected to enhance economic and trade ties, as well as foster people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, according to Chinese state media.
Since passenger customs clearance resumed on April 1, the Khunjerab Pass has facilitated over 50,000 travellers. By the end of October, the port recorded over 11,000 inbound and outbound vehicles, while import and export cargo volume reached 40,900 tonnes—a 42.6% and 72.7% year-on-year increase, respectively, as per Khunjerab Customs.
