Mayor Karachi Strengthens Urban Ties During Shanghai Visit

KARACHI (AIA) Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, held a cordial and high-level meeting with the Mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng, during his ongoing visit to China, according to a statement issued Thursday.
In the meeting, both mayors discussed various aspects of strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing mutual cooperation between Karachi and Shanghai.
Mayor Gong briefed Mayor Wahab on Shanghai’s modern and efficient urban transport system, highlighting its planning, technological framework, and principles of sustainable development that have made it a global model.
Mayor Wahab also visited the Shanghai Transportation Command Centre, where he received a comprehensive overview of the city’s traffic management systems, mass transit infrastructure, and the integration of modern technology in urban mobility.
Both sides agreed to learn from each other’s experiences and promote cooperation in key sectors such as urban development, public transport, environmental protection, and infrastructure planning. Praising Shanghai’s urban model, Wahab termed it “worth emulating”.
As part of his official visit, Wahab is also scheduled to tour other important facilities managed by Shanghai’s municipal administration. These include departments overseeing urban governance, public utilities, and civic services.
During his visit, he is also expected to hold meetings with senior urban leaders, technical experts, and representatives from various departments of Shanghai’s city government.
The visit is expected to further strengthen the brotherly relationship between Karachi and Shanghai and open new avenues for collaboration in urban development.
Mayor Gong expressed hope that the two cities would collaborate on joint developmental projects and public welfare initiatives by sharing expertise. He stressed the importance of strengthening economic partnerships between Pakistan and China at the municipal level.
