UNITED NATIONS (AIA) Pakistan was re-elected on Friday to the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for a four-year term (2026–29), reaffirming its key role in combating the global drug menace.
The election took place during the resumed session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the UN’s principal economic body, where Pakistan secured the highest number of votes among countries vying for seats in various regional groups.
Vote breakdown in the 54-member Council:
Pakistan – 50 votes
Kazakhstan – 46
United Arab Emirates – 43
Kyrgyzstan – 41
Iran – 25
“Pakistan is gratified by the resounding support received from ECOSOC,” stated a press release issued by the Pakistani Mission to the UN, adding that it reflects international confidence and trust in Pakistan’s continued active role in the CND and its contribution to global counter-narcotics efforts and multilateral drug policy discussions.
The mission further stated that Pakistan looks forward to working closely with fellow ECOSOC members and the wider UN community to strengthen the CND’s role as the primary global drug policy-making body, ensuring that international drug control efforts remain comprehensive, effective, and aligned with the three UN drug control conventions.
Established in 1946, Pakistan has long assisted the United Nations in supervising the implementation of international drug control treaties.
