— November 7, 2024
ISLAMABAD (AIA) A high-level World Bank delegation, led by Vyjayanti T. Desai, Practice Manager for Digital Development in South Asia, visited the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Headquarters on Thursday. The visit focused on Pakistan’s digital initiatives, specifically progress in digital identity and economic development, as part of the country’s drive toward a digitally inclusive society.
During the meeting, NADRA Chairman provided an update on the World Bank-funded Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), a significant initiative aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s economy through digital transformation. DEEP supports Pakistan’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) strategy, seeking to expand access to essential services like healthcare, education, and financial systems through enhanced digital identity systems and nationwide adoption.
Desai and other World Bank officials, including senior representatives from the U.S. and Pakistan, reviewed NADRA’s strategies to streamline the implementation of DEEP, ensuring an effective rollout of digital identity solutions across the country. The World Bank underscored its commitment to supporting NADRA’s efforts, emphasising that a strong digital identity framework can promote economic growth, increase government transparency, and improve social inclusion.
The collaboration between NADRA and the World Bank reflects their shared goal of building robust digital infrastructure in Pakistan, positioning the country as a leader in South Asia’s digital landscape. Through projects like DEEP, Pakistan aims to enable its citizens to actively engage in a digital economy, setting a regional example of digital progress.
