ISLAMABAD (AIA) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the swift and transparent privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), emphasizing the retention of the airline’s name and national identity.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad, the PM instructed authorities to expedite all stages of the privatization process. He also called for a comprehensive plan to boost the number of airworthy aircraft and ensure punctual flight operations.
Officials briefed the meeting that four parties have been pre-qualified, and bidding will be held soon. As per the plan, 75% of PIA’s shares will be privatized, but the carrier’s name and flag theme will remain unchanged.
The business strategy includes increasing the fleet from 18 to 38 operational aircraft and expanding the route network from 30 to over 40 cities by 2029.
