Sartyoon Sang Exhibition: Rural Women Bring Sindh’s Traditions to Karachi
— January 7, 2025
KARACHI (AIA) Thousands of female artisans from Sindh will showcase their work at the 16th Sartyoon Sang Crafts Exhibition, set to take place at Ocean Mall in Clifton, Karachi. The four-day event, organised by the Sindh Rural Support Organisation (SRSO) in collaboration with the Sindh Government, will run from Thursday, 9 January, to Sunday, 12 January 2025.
The exhibition aims to provide rural women artisans with market linkages and enhance their incomes. Stalls in the mall’s main foyer will feature traditional garments, Ajrak, furniture, leather handbags, bed sheets, decoration pieces, and other handmade items.
SRSO Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Dittal Kalhoro highlighted the event’s role in empowering women from underdeveloped areas, including Jacobabad, Kandhkot-Kashmore, Shikarpur, Ghotki, Qambar-Shahdadkot, Badin, and other districts of Sindh. “We have trained thousands of women in various trades and encouraged them to integrate urban trends into their crafts to increase their market appeal,” Kalhoro said.
He also noted that SRSO has been organising these exhibitions for 16 years, consistently attracting significant public interest in Sindh’s traditional crafts. “To distinguish their work from mass-produced goods, we have introduced innovative touches such as intricate network designs on blankets,” Kalhoro added.
The exhibition is expected to draw large crowds, providing a platform for rural artisans to showcase their skills and connect with urban buyers.
