Tax Reforms Target Relief for Common Man, says PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD (AIA) Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that the government’s ongoing tax reforms are focused on reducing the financial burden on the common man.
He made these remarks while chairing a meeting in Islamabad on matters related to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
The prime minister said the reforms would help expand the tax net and increase government revenue. He noted that amendments to various provisions of the Income Tax Ordinance and the Federal Excise Act are intended to eliminate hurdles in tax collection.
Shehbaz added that the new amendments would simplify the tax payment process and would not compromise the rights of individuals and companies who consistently pay their taxes.
He instructed the concerned authorities to prioritise action against tax evasion, under-invoicing, and other irregularities in various sectors. He also directed strict legal measures against the trade of illicit cigarettes and other unauthorised goods.
The meeting was briefed on the actions taken to curb tax evasion in sectors such as tobacco, cement, poultry, sugar, and beverages. It was stated that a digital monitoring and track-and-trace system is currently being developed, and the FBR has successfully identified irregularities in several industries through video surveillance.
The meeting was also told that the authority to seize illicit products has been devolved to the provinces.
