Pakistan Strengthens Climate Resilience Despite Low Carbon Footprint: PM

ISLAMABAD (AIA) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to integrating climate action across all sectors, emphasising policies aimed at resilience and sustainability.
In a message marking Earth Hour Day on March 22, 2025, the prime minister highlighted key initiatives, including Recharge Pakistan, which focuses on ecosystem restoration, and strategic policies such as the National Adaptation Plan (2023) and National Clean Air Policy (2023).
“Every year, during Earth Hour, millions around the world switch off their lights—a symbolic gesture to inspire action, raise awareness, and encourage sustainable practices,” he said.
Despite contributing less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan remains one of the most climate-vulnerable nations, facing devastating floods, extreme heatwaves, and prolonged droughts, he noted. These events threaten millions of lives, food security, water resources, and urban infrastructure.
The prime minister stressed that the government’s focus on renewable energy, plastic waste reduction, and green job creation is shaping a long-term environmental strategy. However, he urged that true change must start at home, with individuals and communities embracing sustainable practices.
“This Earth Hour, starting at 8:30 p.m. tonight, let us unplug to reconnect—with our families, our communities, and the Earth itself—for a brighter and more sustainable tomorrow,” he added.
