AIOU Pioneers Free Education for Persons with Disabilities in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AIA) Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is committed to enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities by providing free education from matriculation to PhD levels, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood said on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Highlighting the university’s initiatives, Dr. Mahmood noted the establishment of an E-Learning Accessibility Centre within its library, specifically designed for visually impaired students. The centre is equipped with advanced technology, including specialised computers, headphones, and software, allowing students to access the Higher Education Commission’s digital library, e-books, research articles, journals, and theses with ease.
“AIOU takes pride in being the only public-sector university in Pakistan offering free education to persons with disabilities up to the postgraduate level,” Dr. Mahmood said. He also mentioned the availability of scholarships for students with disabilities, supported by a dedicated fund in the university’s annual budget.
