Massive Fire at Kashif Center Exposes Emergency Preparedness Gaps

KARACHI (AIA) A catastrophic fire engulfed the multi-story Kashif Center building on Sharah-e-Faisal, prompting a massive multi-pronged rescue operation that saved countless lives. The blaze, which erupted on the second floor, spread rapidly, trapping dozens of people, including women, in the building.
Swift response from the Karachi Fire Department, following the emergency call at 10:45 AM, ensured timely deployment of fire engines and rescue teams. Brave firefighters battled the inferno for hours, finally bringing it under control and rescuing people trapped inside.
Miraculously, there were no fatalities, although one firefighter sustained injuries and several others were affected by the smoke. The rescue operation was a testament to the bravery and expertise of the Karachi Fire Brigade, who utilized fire tenders and snorkels to combat the blaze.
However, the incident highlights the alarming lack of emergency preparedness in Karachi’s high-rise buildings. Many structures, including the Kashif Center, have no emergency exits, and elevators are often shut down during fires, leading to chaos. Furthermore, fire extinguishers are either absent or unused in many buildings.
In a shocking revelation, Karachi stands out as the only city globally where firefighters are not employed in building maintenance staff. This glaring oversight highlights the need for urgent reforms to prevent such disasters in the future.
