NADRA’s Digital Push Gains Ground with Provincial Agreements
— May 14, 2025
ISLAMABAD (AIA) As part of the Government of Pakistan’s “Udaan Pakistan” digital transformation initiative, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), in collaboration with provincial governments, has launched the deployment of digital birth and death notification tools in healthcare facilities nationwide.
Under the National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework, NADRA is taking concrete steps to modernise the country’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system. These digital tools are being installed at healthcare centres to enable real-time, accurate, and comprehensive recording of vital events—such as births and deaths—at the point of occurrence.
The data generated will form a foundational element of the “Udaan Pakistan” programme, supporting technology-driven reforms and fostering economic growth through a robust digital infrastructure. These statistics will also drive national projects like Digital ID and the digital economy.
As part of this initiative, NADRA is spearheading the Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), a collaborative effort supported by the World Bank and coordinated with other national stakeholders.
To operationalise the CRVS system countrywide—including in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB)—a series of formal agreements are being signed between NADRA and provincial governments.
A recent signing ceremony in Karachi was attended by Saeed Ghani, Sindh’s Minister for Local Government, Housing, and Town Planning. The agreement was signed by the Secretary of Health and the Secretary of Local Government on behalf of the Sindh government and by the Director General of NADRA Karachi.
Earlier, a similar agreement was signed in Quetta between NADRA and the Government of Balochistan, represented by the Provincial Secretary of Health, Secretary of Local Government, and Director General NADRA Balochistan.
