UNITED NATIONS (AIA) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday, urging him to leverage his office to ensure the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, including the right to self-determination for the Kashmiri people.
During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the prime minister briefed Guterres on the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). He expressed Pakistan’s deep concerns over India’s actions in the region and emphasised the need to resolve the Kashmir dispute to secure lasting peace and stability in South Asia.
PM Shehbaz praised Guterres for organising the upcoming “Summit of the Future” and expressed hope that it would help developing nations close the financial gap in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate goals.
The prime minister also condemned Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians, calling for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire. He urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and reiterated Pakistan’s support for the creation of a viable, sovereign state of Palestine.
In addition, PM Shehbaz highlighted the growing threat of Islamophobia and called for international efforts to combat discrimination against Muslims. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to global peace and security, noting the country’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2025–26 term.
Guterres thanked Shehbaz for Pakistan’s continued engagement with the UN, particularly its contributions to international peacekeeping efforts.
