UN Declares July 6 as World Rural Development Day

UNITED NATIONS (AIA) The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution, proposed by Bangladesh, to designate July 6 as “World Rural Development Day.” The resolution, which was passed without a vote, was co-sponsored by Pakistan and 42 other countries. It underscores the critical importance of advancing rural development and aligns with the global commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at eradicating poverty.
Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Bangladesh’s UN Ambassador, introduced the resolution, underscoring the need to reduce poverty, increase food production, promote socio-economic growth, and restore ecosystems. The date, July 6, was chosen to honour the founding of the Centre for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in 1979, which has played a pivotal role in regional rural development.
The resolution calls on all UN Member States, as well as international and regional organizations, NGOs, and other stakeholders, to commemorate this day with activities tailored to their national and regional circumstances. These initiatives aim to foster sustainable development and improve living standards in rural communities. The UN Secretary-General has been tasked with ensuring the celebration of this day and promoting a global commitment to rural advancement.
